Fast Action Against Toaster Fires

Most people don’t think of their kitchens as dangerous places. However given the frequent use of electricity and gas, problems can arise. So when it comes to a kitchen fire, namely one in your toaster, it’s always best to be prepared for the worst-case scenario so that you can act swiftly and calmly. Doing so might help you not only douse the fire, it could also save your family and your home. Small kitchen fires are easily contained when you have the right tools at your disposal. Here’s what you’ll want to do in the event your toaster catches fire.

  • Keep Calm. It can be difficult to maintain a level head in an emergency situation. However, panicking can lead to bad decisions, and also create even bigger problems. The best way to remain calm is to be prepared. Know where your tools are, including fire extinguishers, blankets, and first aid kits, and identify the nearest exits.
  • Cut the Power: In the event of a toaster fire, the first thing you’ll want to do is unplug your toaster from the outlet. This removes the heat source that is causing the fire. If it isn’t safe to remove the plug from the wall, use the fuse box to cut power to your toaster or move on to step three.
  • Smother the Fire: Fires need a fuel source in order to continue burning. Many fires survive on oxygen, which means to put out the fire you must cut the oxygen supply. You can do this by covering your toaster with a fire blanket or using a fire extinguisher (be sure to aim it at the base of the fire). Don’t have the right tools to battle a toaster fire? Move on to step four.
  • Exit Your Home: If the fire is larger in size than a basketball or you feel you don’t have the tools to contain it, exit the home immediately. Call the fire department from your cell phone or from a neighbor’s home.
  • What Not to Do: Never throw flour on a toaster fire, as this could potentially cause an explosion. Instead, try baking soda or salt. Never fan the flames, as this will provide a fire with more oxygen, causing it to grow larger. Always try to smother flames. Keep appliances away from fabric, such as kitchen drapes or tablecloths.
  • Extra Tips: When leaving your home due to a fire, if possible, try to close off the room where the fire is to help contain it as much as possible. Keep appliances clean and free of food to prevent remnants from catching fire. Always use your appliances according to their instructions and intended uses. Replace any appliances that have been damaged as a result of fire.

Battling a toaster fire is not difficult when you remain calm and have the right tools at your disposal. If you need help with restoration following a kitchen fire, be sure to call the experts at Paul Davis.
